About this deal

Xylitol has about the same sweetness as sucrose, [12] but is sweeter than similar compounds like sorbitol and mannitol. [6] Studies carried out in the United States to analyse the effect of xylitol and sorbitol blends in chewing gum and mints on dental plaque (the main cause of tooth decay and gum disease ) showed a considerable decline in plaque growth. Stimulates salivary flow or HO(CH 2)(CHOH) 3(CH 2)OH; specifically, one particular stereoisomer with that structural formula. It is a colorless or white crystalline solid that is freely soluble in water. It can be classified as a polyalcohol and a sugar alcohol, specifically an alditol. The name derives from Ancient Greek: ξύλον, xyl[on] 'wood', with the suffix -itol used to denote sugar alcohols.

Total Sweet Xylitol respects the environment: the European birch and beech wood used to make Xylitol are sustainably grown for paper making, and Xylitol is merely a bi-product. There is no evidence sweeteners stimulate appetite in humans. As part of the evaluation process, the government sets an acceptable daily intake (ADI), which is the maximum amount considered safe to consume each day over the course of your lifetime.

Whilst the amount of xylitol that any dog would have to consume to be dangerous can vary depending on the amount of xylitol in the product itself and the size of the dog in question, dogs should never be given or allowed to eat anything containing xylitol, and if you know or suspect that your dog has eaten xylitol, you should speak to your vet immediately. Humans absorb xylitol more slowly than sucrose, and xylitol supplies 40% fewer calories than an equal mass of sucrose. [12]EFSA panel (April 2011). "Scientific opinion on the substantiation of health claims related to the sugar replacers xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol, lactitol, isomalt, erythritol, D-tagatose, isomaltulose, sucralose and polydextrose and maintenance of tooth mineralisation by decreasing tooth demineralisation, and reduction of post-prandial glycaemic responses". EFSA Journal. 9 (4): 2076. doi: 10.2903/j.efsa.2011.2076. Lower calorie and no calorie sweeteners will not necessarily make a food or drink healthy but can be helpful in reducing your sugar intake. High sugar intakes increase the risk of tooth decay. Therefore, the use of no calorie sweeteners in food and drink, as long as the product does not contain any sugars, can help reduce the risk of tooth decay.
